2022 AFFF Release Response Welcome to the 2022 AFFF Release Response page. Here you can find information regarding the Navy’s testing of the soil and groundwater around the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility.
In response to the November 29, 2022, AFFF concentrate release at the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility, the Navy collected soil samples from the release site to test for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The Navy also collected groundwater samples from nine groundwater monitoring wells in the vicinity of the release site, as well as samples from the Red Hill Shaft to monitor for AFFF constituents. Soil samples were collected from the release site immediately after the release. Groundwater samples were collected weekly from December 2022 and May 2023, then collected monthly between June 2023 to December 2023. The soil and groundwater samples were sent off-island to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-certified laboratories for testing. Test results were shared with the EPA and Hawaii Department of Health, and are available here for public viewing. PFAS Groundwater Results PFAS Soil Results Map of PFAS Sampling Locations PFAS Data
